For building projects, it is said that one can have things done well, quickly and not too expensive … but you can only choose two from that list. Which is wny this project has been a long one. We are pleased to announce that it's ready to let, click on "booking" then "Barn" for availability.

When we bought our house and buildings back in 2006, the roof of the long barn (two barns inline) was in a poor state, with torn black plastic over half of it and the other half not much better. It was important to re-roof it to protect the building and, after we’d replaced the rotten floor too, it didn’t seem like too much of a leap of imagination to convert the barn into another holiday accommodation for two.

We feel we have kept the soul of the building, using traditional building techniques and materials. We mixed up cob (earth and straw) for the walls around the new openings; Photo of the new front door and windowwe’ve applied earth plasters to the walls and, after reading history books to learn how, fabricated immense double door frames made using the oak floor beams that we’d removed when replacing the floor. We’ve chosen environmentally-friendly wood fibre insulation for the roof insulation and we’re going to use colourful tadelakt (Morrocan-style waterproof lime plaster) instead of tiles in the shower room.

This building provides private accommodation, independent from our own home and the other gîte. A large entrance hall leads up the stairs to the accommodation, all on the first floor. An arch at the far end opens into the bedroom, which has an orthopaedic, pocket sprung, zip-link beds, so you choose between two singles or a double, as you wish. There is a table and two chairs under one window, a kitchen area next to that and a comfortable sofa and armchair with footstool in front of a Jøtul wood stove. At the other end of the building is a shower room, with toilet.
